The annual fun run
I attended the second annual Mayors fun run on the 25th of May this year and had lots of fun with my friends Osline and Nyaradzo. I got to know about it because Osline heard about it at the Old
Hararians exercise club. The same way we knew about it last year...
Last year I attended with Osline and Patience. It was our first time and we were not worried about winning at all but we did not want to come last. I remember the agonising 3 kilometers we walked (we got a ride for 2 kilometres) and how my chest burned for hours afterwards. I was seriously out of shape then and weighed over 85kgs. We had just started being serious about exercising and the run (which really was a 5 Kilometer walk) was an excuse to exercise further. Of course since then I have exercised sporadically (when I get really worried about my health and then I slide!), Patie has bowed out of the exercising regime altogether and only Osline has been consistent.

This year with Osline and Nyaradzo we again walked the 5 kilometers and got to the finishing line along with some of the 10 kilometer runners! We walked alongside Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda (who is unbelievably fit for his age!) We were not last but I could not believe that I had made it and was sure my blood pressure was through the roof. A visit to the stand where MARS and Rock Foundation had set up shop told me my BP was disappointingly normal. Of course the walk might not seem like a feat for seasoned runners but it was for us. Not only did we exercise but we did this for charity.
The event raised US$6000 for charity which went to 86 charity homes. Gilbert Mtandiro won the 10km race for the men and Muchaneta Gwata for the women. Dorcas Watira came first in the wheelchair catergory. It is my hope that next year the event will be as well attended and they will include a catergory for the kids.
Join us next year and keep fit.
